Newport News Shipbuilding has an exciting opportunity for employed full-time community college, high school and middle school educators and career/guidance counselors in Hampton Roads this summer.
Selected candidates will spend two consecutive weeks (July 10-14 and July 17-20) at Newport News Shipbuilding working eight hours each day inside the shipyard learning how our nation's nuclear aircraft carriers and nuclear submarines are built.
The paid internship will not include benefits, but continuing education credits will be available, officials note.
Interns will work closely with various departments engaging in trades vocational training and hands-on exercises. Support departments may include engineering, design, crane operations, machining, electrical, painting, pipefitting, rigging, sheetmetal, shipfitting, welding and more.
The internship program aims to enlighten local teachers as well as guidance and career counselors on shipyard operations, what work is like inside the shipyard, and the many shipyard career opportunities and career paths available to their students.
Coordinators advise that this comprerhensive internship (in an industrial heavy manufacturing environment) will be extremely rigorous and physically demanding. It will require the ability to physically access a wide variety of work sites every day, including those aboard ships under various stages of construction or overhaul, including the use of vertical and inclined ladders, and may involve limited kneeling, stooping, standing, etc.
